7 Steps to Image Consulting Business Success

Whether you've just finished your Image Consultant training and are now ready to launch yourself on the world, or you've been consulting for a while and want to grow your business, here's some tips to help you.

STEP 1 - Become a Specialist

If you try and be all things to all people - you'll end up a with a miniscule share of a large market, and your prospects won't be able to tell you apart from the next image consultant. If you develop into a "specialist", you'll be able to grab a large share of a niche. Specialising allows you to do a number of things:

  1. You can target your marketing, so with less marketing effort you actually find more clients

  2. You can charge more, as people expect to pay more for a specialist, and they’re not just comparing you on price.

  3. You can work less hours without a cut in income, since your hourly rate goes up.

  4. You keep your clients for longer, since your services are tailored exactly to suit them.

STEP 2 - Provide Overwhelming Value

With a non-essential service such as image consulting it's important to divide your sales process into two steps.

The first step is to give several compelling reasons why people need your help. Focus on the problems you will help them solve, the benefits they will receive and the changes you'll help bring to their lives.

The second step is to provide overwhelming value so that making the decision to book your services is a "no brainer". Don't assume that they understand how much value you will give by skimming over the description of your services. I've seen so many websites and brochures which simply say "Personal Shopping Trip - $X". This does not provide any indication of the value you will give. Instead it appears to be an expensive way to go shopping!

Instead, spell out the process and the benefits in great detail. Have a look at your competitors' offerings and add more to yours.

For very little cost you could add some worthwhile bonuses which they won't receive if they choose another image consultant. Now there's differentiation!

STEP 3 - Plan Your Growth

We've all heard about the "Law of Attraction". Simply "imagining your success" will not somehow magically make it happen. You do also need to have a plan in place. However the interesting thing is, that once you focus your efforts on implementing the Plan, you start to attract lots of opportunities.

This is an area of great personal interest, and one I've researched with lots of successful people. The one thing they all unanimously agree on is that you need to set SMART goals, and have a detailed action plan in place.

One of my business partners sets goals for everything she does. If she's presenting at a conference, she'll go through a very specific process which gives her a target figure of sales she'll make from stage. 22 times out of 25 she has achieved or exceeded her target. The couple of times she hasn't made many sales was when she did not follow the process and turned up - "hoping to make a few sales".

Being focused on a target sharpens your skills, your productivity and your effectiveness.

In any business there are infinite ways you can grow your business. There are so many strategies - you can get overwhelmed with them all and not know what to do first. The usual result of this is paralysis! You find yourself sticking with the familiar or chasing after more and more information which means you don't make decisions and nothing gets implemented. Sound familiar?

STEP 4 - Organise a Steady Stream of Leads From a Variety of Sources

Building a profitable image business purely on referral is no longer relevant or achievable in todays marketplace.

It's a numbers game. You need to understand the maths, then make it work for you. So, if out of 10 enquiries you usually get 2 bookings, then to achieve 6 consultations a week you need 30 enquiries.

To receive 30 enquiries per week you need to have several lead generation activities in place. These could be things like

  • Articles in the press - offline and online
  • Advertisements in selected magazines or local newspapers
  • Joint Venture promotions to other people's customer lists
  • Referrals from complimentary but non-competitive businesses
  • Name capture facility from your website or blog or both
  • Directory listings - online and offline
  • Public speaking at networking events, tradeshows, conferences
  • Social Media - blogs, social sites, twitter, forums etc

STEP 5 - Build a Relationship With a Good Follow Up System

Did you know that the average person needs to be contacted 7 times before they'll purchase? Of course this will differ from person to person and will depend on what they're purchasing. But the poit remains that we all like to be made to feel special. I don't mean harassed. I mean reassured, have our questions answered, have the risk reduced.

If you don't follow up an enquiry promptly, you've probably lost that sale. If you just give a price and don't follow up again, you've probably lost that sale.

People buy from people they like, so build a relationship. Gain trust.

Make sure you have a good system for recording enquiries, conversations and scheduling follow up calls, emails or mailings. Better still automate it, so you know it's going to happen.

STEP 6 - Build Long Term Client Loyalty

Ensure you deliver a fantastic client experience which delights them and leaves them wanting more. This will do two things for you:

1. Earn a referral. Your clients will tell their friends and colleagues, particularly if you encourage them to do so with a structured client referral program. But you must EARN the referral first.

2. Provide you with the opportunity to deliver more products and services. They may be your products and services, they may be someone elses.

The relationship doesn't end with your first consultation. It should be the beginning. But you must stay in touch and continue to provide overwhelming value.

STEP 7 - Earn More With Passive Income Sources

There's only so many hours a week you can work. And who wants to work all of them? Exchanging hours for money means you are limiting your earning capacity, and stopping the flow of income when you're on holiday.

Smart operators have developed a range of products to sell to their loyal clients, and to people who aren't consulting clients but still want help.

Developing products is quite easy when you know how. There are also numerous affiliate products and services available for you to sell if you don't want to develop your own.

The Most Important Thing You Need to Do NOW

The world's most successful people all have one thing in common. They invest in themselves - by learning as much as they can and honing their skills

The single most important thing you can do to grow your business is to invest in your personal development.

I don’t mean go to Uni and get a marketing degree.  I don’t mean embark on months (even years) of study to learn how to put up your own website or design your own brochures.
